September 16: World Ozone Day and the Responsibility of Chemical Management

Every year on September 16, we observe the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, which was established by the United Nations in 1994 to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987. This historic agreement marked a turning point for environmental protection, as the signatory countries committed to phasing out substances responsible for ozone depletion, including chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

Thanks to this collective effort, the ozone layer is now showing clear signs of recovery, proof that cooperation and regulation can deliver tangible results.

This day is more than an environmental awareness event: it is an opportunity to reflect on the role that businesses, institutions, and citizens alike can play in building a more sustainable future.

The ozone layer: our invisible common good

The ozone layer lies in the stratosphere, between 15 and 35 kilometers above the Earth’s surface, and performs a vital function: it absorbs most of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, protecting life on our planet. Without this “natural shield,” the consequences for human health and ecosystems would be severe: more cases of skin cancer and cataracts, reduced agricultural productivity, and widespread damage to both land and marine environments.

The Protocol taught us that international regulation is not an obstacle to economic growth-it can actually drive innovation. Industries had to replace banned substances with safer alternatives, paving the way for new technologies.

Both share the same mission as the Montreal Protocol: preventing harm to health and the environment before it becomes irreversible, while placing clear responsibilities on those who produce, import, or use chemicals.

As the Montreal Protocol succeeded thanks to international collaboration, the effectiveness of European regulations depends on a shared commitment between institutions, businesses, and consultants.
